The purpose of the School Specialized Learners at Lindsay Lane Christian Academy is to provide an opportunity for students who are considered “unique learners” due to intellectual or physical disability to receive an inclusive education alongside their peers. The school is designed to remove barriers and deliver exceptional educational services to children with special needs in an inclusive educational setting. The program will build on a successful pilot program and target children with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, from preschool to elementary age, who are considered differently-abled learners. While these children learn in non-traditional ways, there are many benefits to incorporating these students into classrooms with traditional learners in their age group.
BACKSTORY: The Zacchaeus Project
The story behind the Zacchaeus Project is based on the biblical character and the saying “Long before
Zacchaeus couldn’t see Jesus, the tree was already planted to meet his need.” The bible tells us that
Zacchaeus was a tax collector and a sinner, but it also tells us that he looked different and acted
different then his peers. He was recognized by Jesus as being different and Jesus asked if he could come
to his home. Zacchaeus faith delivered him, and he was freed by the gospel. Most important to the story
is that God predicted that Zacchaeus would need a tree to see Jesus and therefore planted one long
before he needed it.
At Lindsay Lane Christian Academy, the Department of Specialized Learners was born based on this very
concept. Their goal is to equip young learners who are considered “unique learners” due to intellectual
or physical disabilities to receive an inclusive education along-side their typical peers. The intent is to
provide this highly enriching educational process at their predetermined grade level through academic
coursework adaptations, 1:1 aide support, and ancillary services such as occupational, physical and
speech therapy. Additional services might include behavioral therapy and assistive technology.
Essentially, the program operates to remove as many potential learning barriers as possible so that the
student may be fully inclusive in a traditional classroom with his or her neuro-typical peers.
